Summer bedtime can drift without anyone choosing it. A gentle reset usually works better than trying to force an early bedtime the night before school begins.

Start with wake time

Move bedtime and wake time earlier in small steps every few days. Morning light, breakfast and activity at the new wake time help the body clock adjust.

Make bedtime predictable

Choose a short sequence you can repeat: wash up, pajamas, books, lights out. Consistency matters more than designing the perfect routine.

  • Move late screens and sugary treats earlier
  • Darken the room while summer evenings are bright
  • On missed-nap days, consider an earlier bedtime
  • Keep weekend timing reasonably close during the reset

Practice the morning

A few days before school, rehearse getting dressed, eating and leaving at the real time. Place bags, shoes and required paperwork together the night before.

Protect sleep without chasing perfection

Some nights will go badly. Return to the routine the next evening instead of introducing a new strategy every night. Ask your pediatrician for guidance if sleep problems are persistent or affecting daytime behavior.

Small, repeatable shifts beat one dramatic bedtime battle.
