Start before the need becomes urgent
Expecting families often research infant care during pregnancy. For older children, begin months ahead when possible, especially if the schedule or location must be very specific.
Ask how this waitlist actually works
A useful conversation goes beyond “How long is the wait?”
- Is the list ordered, age-based or dependent on classroom movement?
- Is there a fee or deposit, and is it refundable?
- How much notice will I receive when a space opens?
- Can my requested start date or schedule be changed?
- How often should I check in?
Keep a backup that you could truly use
Tour more than one licensed option and consider whether family care, a temporary schedule change or another location could bridge a gap. Do not join lists for programs you would never accept.
Reconfirm before making work decisions
An estimated opening is not the same as a guaranteed start date. Get enrollment terms and confirmed timing in writing before changing leave or employment arrangements.
Early planning creates choices, but clear questions protect you from treating an estimate like a promise.
